Todays Karan
Karan Today is the fourth part of todays Panchangam as per the Indian vedic time calculations. Karans are 11 eleven in numbers spanning accross the 360° bhachakra or zodiac wheel.
The hindi calendar Day (Tithi) is the basis for Karana in Panchang. A Karan is actually half of a Tithi span. A Karan is said to be complete when the difference between the Moon's and Sun's positions is a multiple of six degrees.
Karan Names
Karan are 11 in numbers and their Names are Bav Karana, Baalav Karana, Kaulav Karana, Taitil Karana, Gar Karana, Vanij Karana, Vishti or Bhadrā Karana, Shakuni Karana, Chatushpad Karana, Nāg Karana and Kimstughna Karana.
The first seven Karans are referred to as 'Char' which means variable, and the last four as 'Sthir' which indicates constant. The last four are referred to as 'Sthir' because they always fall within a set time frame, beginning with the second half of Krishna Paksha (Dark Fortnight) Chaturdashi and ending with the first half of Shukla Paksha (Bright Fortnight) Pratipada.
